Blue Plaques

If you wish to mark a building, an event or a person connected to a place, putting up a blue plaque can be a simple way to make the importance of a place known to the public. Blue plaques are often managed by local civic societies. If you wish to put up a blue plaque, you can find your local civic society through Civic Voice.

If you can’t get in touch with your local civic society, you might want to contact your local authority’s conservation or Historic Environment Record officer. A blue plaque typically costs around £500. There are many different ways to fundraise for this money. Have a look at our funding guidance for more information.

Funding Guidance

One of the biggest heritage funders in the UK is the National Lottery Heritage Fund. They fund projects from £3,000 to millions of pounds. You can find more information on their website.

The Heritage Funding Directory contains information about several hundred funders. You can search by location and type of heritage.

Historic England have more guidance on other places you can find funding.

Connect With Your Heritage

How to use this digital toolkit:

1. On the start page of the toolkit there are pictures of lots of different types of heritage. Click on the one that feels closest to the heritage you would like to celebrate.

2. Once you have clicked on your type of heritage, the page will describe this kind of heritage and include some pictures. If you think this is not the right type of heritage click the go home button to return to your options.

3. Read through the page. At the bottom there will be some links to other pages or other websites to help you celebrate your heritage. Either follow these to another website or to another page in the toolkit which will give you more information.

You can always ask your facilitator to help if you are struggling.
